Raju Sutar

Raju Sutar was born on 24 October 1971 into a carpenter's family. He studied fine arts at Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya in Pune, graduating in 1992, and was mentored by M.F. Husain, Akbar Padamsee, Prabhakar Barwe and, above all, Vijay Shinde, under whose influence he turned to abstraction.
He paints large canvases, makes large sheet-metal installations and works in fine-art photography and video, drawing on philosophy and science. He describes his central pursuit as the "depths of abstraction".
He is also a curator, and calls himself a "Meta-Artist". His work includes curation and conservation at the Zapurza Museum of Art & Culture, curating the Indian Ceramic Triennale, and taking part, as artist and curator, in the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Documenta 13 (Kassel) and the Florence Biennale 2015.
