Lalu Prasad Shaw

Lalu Prasad Shaw was born in Bengal in 1937 and trained in fine arts at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata. He is known for stylised portraits of Bengali women and couples that emphasise physical features and capture expression with minimal line and colour.
His gouache and tempera works draw on the Company School, Kalighat Pat and the Ajanta cave paintings, and often depict quiet scenes from everyday Bengali middle-class life. He began printmaking at thirty-two, working in intaglio and lithography, and became recognised as a printmaker as well as a painter.
He has exhibited in India and abroad since 1956, including the British Biennale (London, 1970), the Paris Biennale (1971) and the Norwegian Print Biennales. His work is in the permanent collections of the Birla Academy in Calcutta and the Art Forum in Singapore. He lives and works in Kolkata.
